Core Boards
A core board is a communication tool that helps people express themselves using words and/or pictures. There are a huge variety of different core boards available. It can be used as a primary means of communication or as a supplement or a backup. It is a form of low-tech AAC.
Most high-tech communication applications also have low-tech versions of their applications available.
Topic Boards
Topic boards are similar to core boards, but serve a specific purpose. They are low-tech grids with symbols that are specific to a topic. You may see topic boards related to holidays, specific books, or certain activities. In general, best practice supports using a full communication system rather than a topic board, so as not to limit the AAC user's ability to communicate, but there may still be some instances when a topic board is useful.
